An old fridge is anything but useless! In a well-structured trio with his partner Filiz Sizanli, Mustafa Kaplan transforms it in a surreal character. The ludicrous and dreamlike humor of an engineer and a former architect.
With their overflowing imagination, Mustafa Kaplan and Filiz Sizanli recycled an old fridge and transformed it in a gym apparatus and a dance partner which is both an enemy and an accomplice. Around this “Dolap”, meaning wardrobe but also plot in Turkish, they’re tricked by some ludicrous and silly situations, like two furniture movers who’d step in the imaginary world of a child. Adults might grasp different metaphors…

Taldans “Dolap” adlı oyunu, YAP İstanbul Modern için yeniden performe ediyor. “Bedenin mimari ile ilişkisi üzerinden kurgulanan oyun” iki dansçının yer aldığı bir düet gibi görünürken, oyunun merkezinde konumlandırılan buzdolabıyla aslında bir trioya dönüşüyor. Makinanın büyük hacmiyle olan ilişki, süreçte insanın değil de nesnenin belirleyici bir rol oynadığını fark ettiriyor. Oyun, YAP: Yeni Mimarlık Programı kapsamında ve PATTU’nun müze bahçesi için tasarladığı KATI OLAN HER ŞEY adlı alanda gerçekleşiyor.
“Başlangıçta prova ve sunum aşamaları arasındaki farkın sadece etkisini azaltmak değil, onu tamamen yok etmek üstüne çalışıyorduk. Her prova, eser (eserin herhangi bir sunumundan biri) olabilirdi. Ya da her sunum farklı olasılıkların bir provasıydı. Bu şekilde, bir eserin her zamana ve her mekâna uyum sağlama sorununa meydan okuyabilecek bir formül bulmaya çalıştık. ‘Dolap’, sabit bir forma ya da önceden belirlenmiş bir sona sahip değildir ve bizim bu soruna yaptığımız bir çözüm önerisidir.”

Taldans performs their play “Dolap” for YAP Istanbul Modern. Constructed on the relationship between body and architecture, the play at first seems to be a duet performed by two dancers, but with a refrigerator taking the center of the stage, it effectively turns into a trio. The struggle with the imposing bulk of the machine makes us realize that it is the object rather than the human being that plays a determining role in the process. The play takes place in the site-specific installation ALL THAT IS SOLID designed by PATTU for the museum’s courtyard within the scope of the YAP Istanbul Modern: Young Architects Program.
“At first we were working on a way to entirely eliminate the difference between rehearsal and performance rather than merely trying to reduce the effect of this difference. Every rehearsal could be the piece itself (or any one of its performances). Or, every performance was a rehearsal of other possibilities. Thus, we tried to figure out a way to challenge the problem of creating a work that can be adapted to any time and space. ‘Dolap’ does not have a fixed form or a predetermined ending. It is a solution we propose to this problem.”

Taldans, 2000 yılında Dulcinea Çağdaş Sanat Galerisi için yaptığı “Dolap” adlı oyununu 4 Mart Çarşamba günü, saat 19.00’da SALT Galata’da sahneliyor.
Taldans’ın uluslararası festivallerde en çok oynadığı, bedenin mimari ile ilişkisi üzerinden kurgulanan Dolap, senede sadece bir kez olmak üzere farklı bağlamlarda hâlâ oynanmaya devam ediyor. Oyun bu sefer arşiv kavramı bağlamıyla SALT Galata’da sergilenecek. Yazılı ve görsel kayıtlı arşiv çalışmaları için gelen ziyaretçiler Dolap oyununun canlı performansı ile karşılaşacaklar. Kütüphanenin raflarında duran Dolap oyununun videosuna referansla, galeri binasının mimari özellikleriyle de paralellik kurularak kütüphanede performe edilecek.

Taldans is performing Dolap which was created in 2000 for Dulcinea Art Gallery on 4th of March, at 19:00h, at SALT Galata.
Dolap, Taldans’s most played at international festivals play, constructed on the relationship between the body and the architecture, still cotinues to play only once in a year in different contexts. This time the play will be exhibited with the concept of context of archives at SALT Galata. The visitors of the written and visual archives will meet with the live performance of Dolap. Referring to the video of Dolap standing in the library shelf, it will be performed in the library establishing with the architectural features of of the gallery building.
