600 Steps Project is a project by Taldans, which was established by the Turkish dancer and choreographers Mustafa Kaplan and Filiz Sızanlı. 600 Steps Project is an exchange to mark the 600th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between Poland and Turkey (2014). The project aims to explore the themes of cities and the memories of two cities in particular: Istanbul and Warsaw.

The interdisciplinary project was carried out by dancers, musicians, choreographers, a composer and an architect/designer. The project was created together by Filiz Sızanlı, Mustafa Kaplan, Kürşad Özdemir, Iza Szostak, Karol Tymiński, Wojtek Ziemilski and Zorka Wollny.

The artists worked in urban spaces as well as in the studio where they experienced and explored the city as collectors. As a result, the viewers are able to see different kinds of installations of found-objects from the two cities, accompanied by performances which allow for a closer meeting with the artists.

The Phases of the Project:

– In August 2013, two artists from Istanbul – Mustafa Kaplan and Filiz Sızanlı of Taldans, worked in Warsaw. For the first four days of their stay, the duo explored the city and later organized blind dates with Polish artists. After working separately, the established group collaborated together on the final project during a three-day workshop.
– In February 2014, four Polish artists traveled to Istanbul for a ten-day residency. For the first four days, they lived  in different parts of the city to explore it on their own. Following that, the whole group gathered together at SALT Galata in order to brainstorm 600 new ways of exploring the city.
– All the artists met in Warsaw for another one-week residency. At the end of their stay, the final project was represented at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art, on 28 September 2014 as part of the Body/Mind Festival.
– The final production was also presented at SALT Galata for Istanbul audience on 30 October 2014.

We Need To Move Urgently

“There is a beautiful mess outside, how can you stay in?” is written on a city wall. “We need free space not castle dreams” says another wall text.

This project initially began by questioning the responsibility and role of art and science in current society. Later the process was subjected to a forceful social event that changed the course of the work- the events in Gezi park in Istanbul in 2013.

It was only one in a series of many deep social -and artistic- upheavals in the past years, from New York over Brazil or Lisbon to Istanbul. They gave rise to thousands of spontaneous ideas, initiatives and gave birth to a temporary social order that organized itself. Social cybernetics in the making.

Objects gathered from various cities, prompted us, as three individual performing ,artists, to relate to the events. Back in the studio, they became materials for an analogue spatial and mental model where we could grasp the processes and work in a free space. A model to zoom in and out from.

Taldans performs their play “Dolap” for YAP Istanbul Modern. Constructed on the relationship between body and architecture, the play at first seems to be a duet performed by two dancers, but with a refrigerator taking the center of the stage, it effectively turns into a trio. The struggle with the imposing bulk of the machine makes us realize that it is the object rather than the human being that plays a determining role in the process. The play takes place in the site-specific installation ALL THAT IS SOLID designed by PATTU for the museum’s courtyard within the scope of the YAP Istanbul Modern: Young Architects Program.

“At first we were working on a way to entirely eliminate the difference between rehearsal and performance rather than merely trying to reduce the effect of this difference. Every rehearsal could be the piece itself (or any one of its performances). Or, every performance was a rehearsal of other possibilities. Thus, we tried to figure out a way to challenge the problem of creating a work that can be adapted to any time and space. ‘Dolap’ does not have a fixed form or a predetermined ending. It is a solution we propose to this problem.”
